IMPORTANT PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVE SUPER
If you are a client of PWM Advice you would be well informed of what is happening with the stock markets and what the Australian Government is doing to stimulate the economy, we wanted to send this out to everyone we know to keep you up to date.
We have already seen a few friends lose their jobs and some businesses having to make tough decisions about staff.
As you understand we cannot influence or predict the economic impact of the Corona virus and we cannot manage the market’s reaction to it. We do however want to keep you well-informed, even if you are not a client, about what is happening in the economy and the markets and what it means for your Retirement Savings.
Your Super balance over the last month may have dropped by 10% up to 40%, but unless you sell those investments to cash you have not lost the individual shares or units.
The Superannuation funds we offer are made up of units and each unit has a unit price and if you have shares they have a share price that are mostly calculated daily so you know how your Superannuation is fairing.
If you have an industry fund they may only set their unit prices once a year, this is called a crediting rate, the industry fund calculates the annual or declared crediting rate for each investment option at the end of the financial year. So if your fund is using a crediting rate the returns they are stating may be for last year and you will not know how much your fund is down till year end, an example of a fund who uses crediting rate is CBUS.
The unit and share prices have dropped and hence your balance has dropped, but you still hold the same amount of units. Little comfort if you are living off your Super, but for our clients who are doing that, we have other investments that are not affected by the share markets that fund their retirement.
The Government today (fact sheet attached) advised that they are looking to pass legislation for people to access their Super up to $20,000 tax free over the next two years ($10,000 per year), this must be done via the My Gov website (www.my.gov.au) and not through your Super fund, details are:
Eligibility: One of the following requirements must be satisfied for the early release of super:
• You are unemployed; or
• You are eligible to receive a job seeker payment, youth allowance for jobseekers, parenting payment, special benefit or farm household allowance; or
• On or after 1 January 2020:
o You were made redundant; or
o Your working hours were reduced by 20 per cent or more;
o If you are a sole trader – your business was suspended or there was a reduction in your turnover of 20 per cent or more.
If eligible, individuals can apply directly to the ATO via MyGov (www.my.gov.au) and will be required to certify that they meet the eligibility criteria. The ATO will then issue a determination and contact the super fund directly to release the money.
If you want to organise a ZOOM meeting or Phone meeting instead of coming into the office we are happy to do so just call 02 6360 1232 to book it in.
Please stay safe, stay calm and try and have a laugh please.
